Hearing Aid Fitting and Evaluation
Micro CIC (Deep Canal Fitting)
Fit deeply inside your ear canal. Completely-in- the-Canal (CIC) hearing instruments are
the smallest, custom-designed hearing instruments. Hidden in the shadow of your ear
canal, they fit deep inside your ear and are virtually invisible.
Complete In The Canal (CIC)
Small and cosmetically discreet. The CIC instruments fit completely in the canal and are
custom-made. There is a clear nylon string to help with insertion and removal.
These are larger than the CIC devices. Small enough to fit almost entirely in your ear
canal. In-the- Canal (ITC) hearing instruments are custom-designed to fit almost entirely
in the ear canal. Less visible than In-the- Ear models, ITCs take up only about one
quarter of the concha – the indented, bowl-like outer portion of your ear. ITC hearing
instruments are created specifically to fit your unique ear size and shape. They may
have manual controls for volume and special listening programs, or these features may
function automatically – giving you the option of how much or how little you control your
instrument.
Half Shell (HS)
These devices can be used for a wide variety of hearing losses. Due to their size, HS
hearing aids allow for larger sound amplifiers and more features such as a telephone
switch or a second microphone. The case is custom made out of a hard plastic material.
As shown, the hearing aid case houses all of the miniaturized hearing aid parts.
In The Ear (ITE)
All parts of the hearing aid are contained in a shell that fills in the outer part of the ear.
The ITE aids are larger than the in-the- canal and completely-in- the-canal aids (see
below), and for some people may be easier to handle than smaller aids.
Behind The Ear (BTE)
The world’s most popular hearing aids. Most parts are contained in a small plastic case
that rests behind the ear; the case is connected to an earmold or an earpiece by a piece
of clear tubing. BTE aids are easy to be cleaned and handled, and are relatively sturdy.
Micro or Mini Behind the Ear image
Micro or Mini BTE hearing aids present a smaller, cosmetically appealing option to
patients with mild to moderate hearing loss. This design offers comfort and acoustic
options as the processor is placed behind the ear and the speaker is placed in the ear.
Because the ear canal is left open, you will not experience the “stuffed up” feeling or the
sensation of your voice sounding strange.
